The challenge for MFT in the age of zero trust

With the spread of teleworking, the rise of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and the increase in access to hosted services, both on-premises and in the cloud, software publishers are putting forward solutions based on the zero trust model.

Zero Trust — ‘never trust, always verify’ — is becoming the backbone of a modern security strategy.

The central objective of Zero Trust is to reduce as far as possible the implicit trust placed in any user, device, or service seeking to access the information system.

Zero Trust is often contrasted with perimeter defence. These two models complement each other and are based on several common principles. Zero Trust is therefore a natural part of a defence-in-depth strategy and should not be seen as a substitute for existing perimeter protection.

This contrast can be represented by the image of a fortified castle. The classic perimeter defence consists of walls and a drawbridge. Once these have been breached, access to the interior of buildings is unrestricted. The Zero Trust, on the other hand, transforms each room in the castle into a secure zone with its own armoured door and access control, so that an intruder cannot move about freely even after passing through the walls.

Let’s have a look at how to implement a zero-trust strategy with a managed file transfer (MFT) tool.

Fundamental principles of zero trust applied to MFT

Implementing zero trust in an MFT environment requires a combination of technologies and processes.

According to NIST (SP 800-207) recommendations, a zero trust strategy is based on three key pillars: strong authentication, micro-segmentation, and access control based on identity and context.

For an MFT environment, this translates as follows:

Explicit and strong authentication

The first step is to implement strong authentication, generally multifactor authentication (MFA), which requires each user to prove his or her identity using several elements: password, mobile application, physical key or biometrics. This authentication must apply to all connections, including those initiated by scripts or automated systems. The aim is to eliminate vulnerable entry points, such as service accounts with static passwords.

Encryption everywhere, all the time

The second dimension is the systematic encryption of data, both in transit and at rest. In an MFT, this means using secure protocols such as SFTP, FTPS or HTTPS for transfers and using robust algorithms such as AES-256 or PGP for storage.

Least privilege and granular control

Contextual access control achieves this approach. It is no longer just a question of limiting rights and checking who the user is, but also of analysing the conditions under which they connect: geographical location, type of device, level of system updates, and access times. In this way, an authorised user can be denied or restricted access if they try to connect from an unusual country or from a terminal that does not comply with security policies. The associated diagram could be visualised as a traffic light at the entrance to a tunnel, green if all conditions are met, orange if restrictions apply, and red if access is refused.

Segmentation

A fourth essential building block of zero trust applied to MFT is micro-segmentation. This involves dividing flows into logical or physical segments, each with its own access rules. For example, exchanges containing financial data can be confined to a separate network environment from HR data or technical documentation. This separation reduces the impact of an incident: a compromise in one segment does not open the door to the others. Imagine an archipelago where each island is autonomous but linked to the others by bridges that are monitored and controlled.

Continuous monitoring and automated response

Finally, zero trust in an MFT is not limited to prevention. It also includes a capacity for detection and rapid response. This involves continuous monitoring of exchanges via integration with SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) solutions capable of analysing logs in real time. In the event of abnormal activity, such as an unscheduled mass transfer, sending to an unusual destination, or repeated failed authentication attempts, the system can automatically trigger countermeasures: suspending an account, interrupting a flow, or triggering an investigation.

The combination of MFT and zero-trust does not stop at the points mentioned above, but these are the main advantages.

It often follows a gradual path: mapping existing data flows, classifying data, strengthening authentication, deploying encryption, introducing micro-segmentation, DLP/DRM integration and then advanced supervision. This gradual ramp-up reduces the impact on users and allows policies to be adjusted according to feedback and operational constraints.

ETL vs MFT: two approaches to data management and integration

Companies today are faced with a wide choice of technological solutions for managing, transforming and securing information flows. In just a few years, the IT market has become highly competitive and fast-moving.

Digital figures, between competition and evolution

In 2024, worldwide spending on software reached USD 675 billion, an increase of almost 50% compared to 2020 (USD 454 billion)1.

In 2016, there were an estimated 21 million professional software developers/engineers². This figure rose to around 28 million in 20233, and is expected to reach ≈28.7 million in 20252. The massive creation of companies and the boom in IT employment are evidence of strong growth in the ecosystem. SaaS, cloud solutions and digital transformation platforms have become the norm for more than 90% of businesses in 2023.

The software market is continuing to grow at a rate of 5% to 8% per year and is not about to stop.5

However, today we are going to focus on two major types of solution that dominate the market: ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tools and MFT (Managed File Transfer) solutions, which are becoming increasingly popular for their simplicity, security and efficiency. While ETLs have long been the standard for data integration projects, MFT is now emerging as an increasingly popular solution.

Understanding the fundamental difference between ETL and MFT

ETL

Historically, ETL solutions have been designed to extract data from several sources (databases, flat files, APIs), transform it according to complex business rules, then load it into data warehouses or target systems. They are mainly used for business intelligence analysis, data lakes and business repository synchronisation.

Tools such as Talend and Informatica offer powerful data processing capabilities, but their implementation is often cumbersome, costly and inflexible. They require specialist developers, a robust infrastructure and a long development cycle. What’s more, the cost of licensing these solutions can run into the hundreds of thousands of euros for enterprise deployments.

MFT

In contrast, MFT (Managed File Transfer) solutions focus on secure, automated and supervised file transfers. They guarantee the integrity of data in transit, and offer advanced traceability, alert and automatic recovery functions. Historically seen as solutions limited to simple data transfers, modern MFT platforms now incorporate simple data transformation functions, intelligent workflows and connectors to a wide range of ERP, CRM and cloud systems. They can also be complemented by cybersecurity solutions such as inspection, sanitisation and recognition of sensitive data.

Case studies by business sector

1- Finacial sector

Let’s take the example of the banking sector, where the security of exchanges is crucial. A major banking institution recently replaced its ETL infrastructure with an MFT solution to orchestrate exchanges between its subsidiaries, financial partners and regulatory authorities. Whereas ETL required complex developments for each flow, MFT enabled rapid configuration via a graphical interface, with deployment times reduced by 60%, while meeting strict compliance requirements (encryption, logs, audit, etc.).

2- Healthcare sector

In the healthcare sector, hospitals and laboratories have to exchange sensitive files on a daily basis, such as biological results, medical records, financial data for insurance purposes, and so on. Using an MFT solution not only ensures compliance with regulations such as RGPD or HIPPA, but also delivers the operational fluidity that is essential for organisations with limited IT resources. Conversely, the use of an ETL would be oversized for this type of requirement, generating unjustified licence and maintenance costs.

3- Retail sector

In the retail sector, some distributors have replaced their ETL solution to automate the exchange of files with their suppliers (purchase orders, inventories, invoices) via an MFT platform. File transfers enable better supervision of exchanges, shorter lead times for bringing new partners into production and fewer human errors, all without the need for specialist developers.

4- Logistics sector

Finally, in the logistics sector, companies that have to interact with heterogeneous systems such as customs, carriers and e-commerce platforms find MFT an agile solution. Whereas an ETL requires a well-defined and stable schema, the MFT tolerates the diversity of formats and enables faster adaptation to the reality on the ground.

Gradual replacement of traditional ETLs

Today, many companies are reviewing their data processing architecture and questioning the value of maintaining heavy, costly ETL platforms, particularly when the use cases do not require advanced data transformation.

Migrations to MFT platforms, which handle up to 80% of the traditional data flows processed by ETLs, have become commonplace. According to a study published in 2024 by Research and Markets 4, more than 40% of companies surveyed had considered replacing their ETL infrastructure partially or totally with MFT, mainly for reasons of cost, maintenance and security.

The trend is also being reinforced by the rise of the hybrid cloud, where MFT is finding its place with its native SaaS connectors, whereas traditional ETLs are struggling to adapt without a major overhaul.

A significant difference in cost and deployment time

One of the major arguments in favour of MFT is its total cost of ownership. Whereas licences for ETL solutions can exceed €100,000 per year, a robust MFT solution can be implemented for a fraction of that price. What’s more, indirect costs (maintenance, skills upgrading, server infrastructure) are much lower. A study by Gartner in 2023 shows that the average cost of deploying an MFT is 3 to 5 times lower than that of a traditional ETL.

MFT also has the advantage in terms of time-to-production. Whereas an ETL project can take several months between design, development and testing, an MFT project can be operational in a few weeks, or even a few days for simple data flows.

Does the future of data integration lie with MFT?

It would be wrong to say that MFT systematically replaces ETL. The two approaches can coexist, depending on the nature of the data flows, the criticality of the transformations to be carried out and the business requirements. However, it is undeniable that many companies are rediscovering the virtues of simpler, faster and more secure integration thanks to Managed File Transfer.

In a tense economic climate, reducing costs and controlling risks are becoming priorities. Replacing an ETL solution such as Talend or Informatica with a well-chosen MFT solution not only meets current needs, but also enables you to adapt more quickly to future regulatory, technical or organisational changes.

Companies looking to rationalise their information systems must now consider MFT as a serious alternative to traditional ETLs. Comment résoudre cette erreur ?

Comment résoudre cette erreur ?

Pour corriger cette exception, suivez les instructions suivantes :

Obtenez le certificat racine ainsi que le certificat de l’autorité de certification intermédiaire (CA), si nécessaire, depuis l’hôte auquel vous tentez de vous connecter.
Importez les certificats dans le Key Vault système de GoAnywhere. Pour plus d’informations sur l’importation d’un certificat, consultez la section Gestion des certificats.

4. Impossible de rejoindre le cluster : le système ’systemname’ possède déjà un enregistrement dans la table des systèmes actifs

Les causes les plus fréquentes de cette erreur sont les suivantes :

Le même nom de système est défini dans le fichier cluster.xml pour deux nœuds (ou plus) de GoAnywhere.
Le nom du système est toujours présent dans la table dpa_active_system de la base de données. Cela peut se produire si le système a été arrêté de manière inattendue et que le nœud n’a pas pu envoyer les commandes d’arrêt appropriées à la base de données. Par exemple, un redémarrage brutal du serveur GoAnywhere.

Comment résoudre cette erreur ?

Pour résoudre cette exception dans le premier cas, renommez votre fichier cluster.xml avec un nom unique. Il est recommandé de choisir un nom facilement identifiable, comme un nom DNS.
Pour résoudre cette exception dans le deuxième cas, assurez-vous que chaque nœud peut atteindre les autres nœuds sur le port de liaison du cluster, tel que défini dans le fichier cluster.xml. Comment résoudre cette erreur ?

Le pilote JDBC SQL Server a été mis à jour vers la version 12.8 dans GoAnywhere 7.7.0.
La propriété de connexion encrypt est désormais définie par défaut sur true lors de la connexion à une base de données SQL Server, que ce soit pour la base de données principale de GoAnywhere, une ressource ou une tâche de projet.

Si le certificat de la base de données SQL Server n’est pas présent dans le KMS (ou dans le magasin de confiance cacerts du JVM), la connexion échouera.

Dans cette version, deux nouveaux algorithmes ont été ajoutés pour les ressources SFTP :

Comment résoudre cette erreur ?

La solution, dans ce cas, est de les désactiver sur les ressources concernées.
Pour cela, accédez à la ressource, allez dans l’onglet Algorithmes, puis modifiez la section Échange de clés (Key Exchange).

Vous pouvez l’adapter si vous avez déjà désactivé certains algorithmes.

L’objectif est d’avoir ces deux-là dans la colonne de gauche.

7. Message d’erreur “Invalid privatekey”

Ce type d’erreur est typique d’un problème de format de votre clé.

Le format actuel de cette clé peut être supporté par le KMS, vous pouvez donc l’importer, mais pas par la ressource, d’où l’erreur.

Ces deux modules utilisent des bibliothèques Java différentes.

Comment résoudre cette erreur ?

Pour éviter cela, vous devez toujours convertir votre clé au format « pem » avant de l’importer dans GoAnywhere.

Vous pouvez utiliser différents outils pour cela.

Par exemple, vous pouvez utiliser la commande suivante :

ssh-keygen -p -f [votre clé privée] -m pem

Importez ensuite la clé convertie et modifiez votre ressource.

Despite this relative slow growth, organizations of all sizes continue to invest in MFT platforms that enable secure and private transportation of files — across size and volume levels — internally and externally. Key reasons for adoption include the following:

Exponential explosion of data, information, devices, endpoints and channels being created today will continue. As a result, there is simply more information that needs to be transported.

Mutual insurance for hospital staff

1/Challenge

Healthcare establishments are faced with the need to modernise their administrative processes. A crucial aspect of these changes is the deposit of monthly contributions, although other types of exchanges are also managed. To meet these needs, a project was launched to replace an old solution that had become obsolete.

The project was motivated by three main objectives.

Replacing the old solution: although the old infrastructure had been in use for many years, it was showing signs of age and was no longer able to meet modern security and efficiency requirements.

Enhancing portal security: protecting sensitive data has become an absolute priority. It was therefore crucial to put in place robust security measures to prevent any attempt to breach data.

Simplified account management: the complexity of managing user accounts and groups had to be reduced to facilitate administration and improve the end-user experience.

2/Implementation of the File Transfer solution

The GoAnywhere MFT solution was chosen for this project. The Advanced Workflows and Secure Forms modules were selected.

Security: Instead of using a shared account, each establishment now has its own nominative account. Each account is attached to a specific group that defines the establishment and the nature of the exchange, guaranteeing more precise and secure management.

To enhance security, a one-time password (OTP) system has been introduced. Each time a user logs on, an OTP is emailed to them, adding an extra layer of protection against unauthorised access.

Simplified management: Groups representing establishments and the nature of exchanges are now created automatically via an API. This automation reduces human error and speeds up the configuration process.

Similarly, the creation of accounts is automated via API. Once created, end users automatically receive the necessary information, simplifying access to and use of the portal.

Replacing the former solution: Specific triggers have been set up for each type of exchange, enabling more detailed and appropriate management of filings.

Once the uploaded files have been processed, an email notification informs users that the upload has been successfully processed or that any errors have been detected, guaranteeing greater transparency and responsiveness.

3/About the modules

Advanced Workflows functions as the automation engine of the GoAnywhere solution, featuring a graphical interface to automate tasks such as: initiating file transfers (push/pull), PGP encryption/decryption is required, whether data needs to be extracted from and/or uploaded to a database and/or additional actions in a transfer are called before/after a file exchange.

Secure Forms allows end users to fill in custom forms with input values, upload files via the HTTPS web client, or submit forms by making SOAP or REST requests from your custom applications. When a form is submitted, a project is run to automatically process the submitted values and files.

Electronic payment and petroleum equipment

1/Challenge

To meet the growing needs of developers, repairers and operators, a new solution, the ”TMS: Terminal Management System”, has been introduced. The main aim of this solution is to make binaries available for DACs (Devices and Controllers), thereby facilitating their management and updating.

The project has two main objectives.

Compliance with the PCI P2PE standard for the protection of sensitive payment card data.

To replace the old solution in order to modernise their ageing infrastructure to deliver better performance and greater reliability. IT staff such as developers and operators needed more advanced functionality to work more efficiently and productively.

2/Implementation of a File Transfer solution

Our technical teams first carried out a detailed needs analysis to define the specifications and scope of the project. A precise estimate was made of the resources required, including development time and technical components.

DAC management was automated and simplified using APIs to enable seamless integration with other systems. Advanced and personalised authorisations were put in place for the different types of user, ensuring that each user has access to the functionality and information they need, without compromising security.

The various packages were then delivered in different phases.

The first phase consisted of developing the essential components of the TMS, or Terminal Management System.

This was followed by rigorous testing to ensure that all functionalities met the initial specifications and user expectations.

In the third phase, identified errors and bugs were corrected, improving the system’s reliability and performance.

Finally, additional functionality was added based on emerging needs and user feedback, with ongoing evaluation of the associated workload.

3/About the modules

The project is based on several advanced technological components of GoAnywhere MFT.

Secure Forms, as described above, and Advanced Workflows to optimise terminal management processes.

Clusters for high availability to ensure that the system remains operational at all times, even in the event of a server failure.

Secure Forms and Secure Folders, or the server side of an HTTPS transfer, implementing a customisable web client that allows end users to connect via a web browser to securely access shared and stored resources.

The FTPS server provides secure file transfer. This is the server side of an FTPS transfer. Your partner connects to you via FTPS and accesses shared resources to retrieve or deposit files via an SSL/TLS encrypted channel.

Financial management company

1/Challenge

This company had a project to modernise and completely migrate its production to a private Cloud. The aim of this strategic change was to replace an old solution with more modern, high-performance technologies such as MFT (Managed File Transfer).

The existing solution was becoming obsolete and no longer met current performance and security requirements.

Migration to a private cloud offers greater flexibility, enhanced security and more efficient management of resources.

2/ Implementation of a File Transfer solution

A new interface has been designed to seamlessly integrate the scheduler with the cloud infrastructure, guaranteeing fluid process management. Individual transfers, previously managed by specific scripts, have been replaced by generic flows. This industrialisation means that transfers can be created faster and more efficiently.

Service Level Agreements (SLAs) have been defined, along with daily reports to ensure that transfers are monitored and compliant.

Detailed, customised logs have been put in place to enable the project management team to monitor and analyse transfers accurately.

An alert system has been implemented, with automatic and manual flow recovery mechanisms, guaranteeing continuity of service and increased responsiveness in the event of an incident.

The project to modernise and migrate to a private Cloud has radically transformed the company’s file transfer management. GoAnywhere MFT and integration modules

Advanced Workflows and Reporting: the automation engine of the solution, a GUI to automate tasks such as: initiate the file transfer (push/pull), if PGP encryption/decryption is needed, if data needs to be pulled from and/or uploaded to a database and/or additional actions in a transfer are called before/after a file exchange.

Standard Agents: provide automated and secure file transfers and workflows on systems throughout the enterprise, regardless of the network. Agents can be installed on almost any server where workflows need to be performed and/or secured. These systems can reside on premises, on remote networks or in a cloud infrastructure. An SSL channel will be established between Remote Agents and the central GoAnywhere MFT server, encrypting any file transfer amongst them. Management of Agents is completely centralized.

Advanced Agents: same functionality as Standards agents, but also allowing the exchange of files with traditional systems than the GoAnywhere MFT server and file servers in the remote network. Advanced Agents allow us to connect to third party systems of SFTP, SCP, Email and SSH directly and interact with them.

Secure Email: secure alternative to emailing files, the Secure Mail module in GoAnywhere allows employees and other authorized users to easily send files (packages) via email to other individuals, securely with unlimited file size. Using both Outlook and/or the embedded web client, users can also send an email requesting file.

OAuth Adds Extra Security Layer to MFT

We’ve all received these messages, “Allow this application to access your account,” or “Sign in with Facebook,” when navigating online. That’s OAuth, or Open Authorization, and this step is often encountered when using Google, X, or Facebook among other services. OAuth blends security and convenience when needing to share authorization data between two different applications.

Instead of the more familiar, basic authentication – the username/password combo – OAuth applies limited use tokens to both authenticate and access secure aspects of applications and service providers. Any number of applications or cloud services, including Managed File Transfer (MFT) solutions, can take advantage of this extra layer of modern security, and convenience.

Security is added. OAuth allows one application to sign into another application without requiring identifying information, such as usernames and passwords. OAuth can verify your identity without involving your identity and can do so on a limited or defined basis.

Rather than requiring username/password credentials, OAuth uses authorization tokens to represent your identity and uses access tokens to define and grant access to some of your data and any actions allowed to be performed with that server. These OAuth tokens for authorization and access are not unlimited, however. The protocol can specify exactly what data the third party can access and define what a client can do on the user’s behalf. For example, you can restrict access for a user to only certain data sets or configure read-only or write-only permissions for that user.

And, because the tokens for authorization and access are protected between the application and the service providers, passwords can’t be compromised, even if the service or application you want to access is threatened.

Convenience is added. OAuth eliminates the need to continually create new accounts or new user credentials to connect with multiple applications or services. Temporary authorization is granted so that users can more easily access secure portions of a given application or service.

In a nutshell, OAuth lets two different applications share the data needed to let you use them without the need to reveal your access credentials. The authorization token is what is used to validate who you are to the OAuth provider (Facebook, Microsoft, etc.) The access token is used to let the provider determine what access is granted within their server you are allowed in to.

How OAuth is Used in Managed File Transfer Solutions

MFT solutions, such as Fortra’s GoAnywhere MFT, that adhere to the most modern security recommendations, can also take advantage of OAuth’s ability to let third-party services exchange user authorization data without the need to actually share credentials. And, through GoAnywhere’s workflows, this process is automated, with users not having to acknowledge or respond to all the prompts of OAuth that they would if working outside of MFT.

Within GoAnywhere, when an authorization token is needed, instead of getting redirected to Microsoft Azure Directory to log in, the client can send the provider the needed credentials to authenticate automatically and be provided with the authorization token. As long as the authentication is successful, GoAnywhere can proceed with the authentication without direct intervention from the user.

GoAnywhere then uses this authorization token to automatically request a separate access token that can give them access to multiple Microsoft services. That access token is what GoAnywhere then provides to Microsoft whenever a user wants to do something such as create a SharePoint site or upload a file via GoAnywhere to be transferred.

Whether client applications utilize OAuth by redirecting you to a login page to authenticate or by handling the process automatically behind the scenes, OAuth offers significant security and configurability benefits. It enables users to grant precise permissions to the client application, ensuring that only the required data and privileges are accessed.

This flexibility allows applications to securely manage access based on user consent, whether through an interactive authorization flow or automated server-to-server interactions. By clearly defining and controlling what data and actions an application can access, OAuth enhances overall security and user trust, making it a versatile solution for a wide range of authentication and authorization needs.

OAuth in GoAnywhere’s SaaS or Cloud Environment

OAuth can be particularly useful in situations such as when you need to automate sending an email, either as part of a scheduled job or an automated alert, from a Microsoft 365 account, where authenticating via Microsoft OAuth v2.0 is required to send the email via the SMTP protocol.

GoAnywhere’s Cloud Connector library includes a connector for Microsoft OAuth that users can integrate into their workflows. This connector is responsible for getting the desired access token from Microsoft that can then be used by either the SharePoint Cloud Connector or by the solution’s Email tasks when users need to generate a token for the IMAP or SMTP protocol.

OAuth is also incorporated through GoAnywhere’s global SMTP alert settings. If an event occurs that the customer wants to notify specific admin users about, GoAnywhere can send an automated email describing the alert. Users can then use OAuth to authenticate for the SMTP session used to send the email.

How MFT Users can Benefit from OAuth

First, the added security gained when the need to store user credentials with the MFT solution helps reduce the likelihood of credentials being stolen or tampered with.

Plus, the additional convenience that allows users to use their existing credentials from the OAuth provider helps reduce the need to maintain a variety of separate credentials when using the MFT solution.

One of the additional advantages is the ability to have more granular control over permissions and over what material can be accessed with those permissions. This granular control over what material can be accessed is managed on the side of the provider (Microsoft, Google, etc.), which an MFT solution would not otherwise be privy to.

In addition, often the alternative to OAuth is Basic Authentication, where a user would simply just provide a username and password, which is less secure, or SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language), an authentication protocol used in enterprise settings. OAuth is another option to give users flexibility to choose what is beneficial for them based on their specific use case. With GoAnywhere, the OAuth process is automated to help ensure the security benefits are applied consistently.
